How to choose an accredited e-invoicing service provider in Oman
Under Fawtara you reach the Oman Tax Authority (OTA) through an accredited service provider (ASP). Whether you are comparing e-invoicing solutions or e-invoicing service providers, this checklist shows what to verify, what to ask, and what stays your responsibility.
What an accredited service provider (Fawtara ASP) does for you
An accredited service provider (ASP), the Fawtara ASP or e-invoicing provider in Oman, is a company the OTA has approved to validate and exchange e-invoices for taxpayers and to report tax data to the OTA. In practice, your provider validates your e-invoices against the Oman rules, exchanges them with your customer's provider, and reports the tax data to the OTA.
The OTA does not charge fees and does not set what providers charge, so pricing differs from one provider to the next. Responsibility for the compliance of each invoice stays with you, and the OTA monitors how providers perform. For the wider picture, read the Oman e-invoicing guide, and use its readiness checklist to see what else is still open.
Step 1: check the OTA's accredited ASP list
The OTA publishes accredited providers on the Fawtara Portal and updates the list as providers are accredited. Look for the provider's legal name on that list.
Do not rely on a provider's own website, a directory or a comparison article, including this one: they can be out of date or commercial. Go to the Fawtara Portal or the OTA's e-invoicing page.
Step 2: ask these ten questions
- Are you on the OTA's accredited list, and under which legal name? The list is the proof.
- How do invoices leave my accounting or ERP system, and who builds and maintains that connection? The OTA says ERP systems can be kept, depending on your arrangement with the provider.
- What do you check before an invoice is sent, and what happens when one fails validation? Providers validate against the Oman schematron rules, but the invoice is still your responsibility.
- Do you cover B2B and B2C, credit and debit notes, and self-billing for imports? The OTA's rules cover all of these.
- How do you handle the QR code on B2C invoices? The taxpayer generates it and it goes on the human-readable copy.
- Where is my data hosted, and what security certification do you hold? The OTA asks providers to document hosting location, backup and retention, and to hold ISO/IEC 27001.
- What support do you offer, in which languages, and with what response times? The OTA asks providers to document support and service levels.
- How is pricing set: subscription, per invoice, or both? Each provider decides.
- What happens if I want to leave, and can I take my data with me? A taxpayer can disconnect and connect to another provider.
- Who stores and archives my e-invoices? Archiving is the taxpayer's responsibility under the VAT legislation, so agree who holds the copies.
What stays your responsibility
A service provider does a lot, but not everything. This is how the OTA's FAQ divides the work.
